Earth Day Celebration 2008 hosted by the LaSalle County Parks Foundation May 8, 2008 |
| Students from several local schools spent the day learning & exploring our environment. Rick Vecchi, Foundation Chairman, lead a nature hike through a small portion of the park. | |
| Bird houses made by Carpenter's Local #195 were presented to each student & teacher. Dr. Ruth Fennick and Lois Guyon gave instructions on how to attract blue birds to nest in the houses. | |
| Ranger Kathy Higdon, from the Corps of Engineers at Starved Rock Lock & Dam, spoke about the dangers of global warming. Our very small supply of fresh water on this planet was visually demonstrated. A game was played to emphasize the effects of melting glaciers. | |
| Sheila Thomas, LaSalle County Extension Service 4-H & Youth worker, had the kids running during her 3 R's presentation. Reduce - Reuse - Recycle | |
| New Foundation member, Lisa Sons, gave an entertaining & enlightening lecture about predator birds. | |
| Rick Swartz, Foundation member, helped each child make a hanging bird feeder from a water bottle. Using straws for the perches, it was an amazing "reuse" of the environmentally problematic plastic bottle. | |
